Let’s learn 5 facts about the Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia).
1. Their diet mostly consist of weed and grass seeds, a few different berry types, and insects.
2. Song Sparrows are one of the only birds that'll sing on a cold morning.
3. The Song Sparrow is also one of the most widespread Sparrows across the United States, they even breed during the summer in Canada.
4. There are about 18,340,180 Song Sparrow observations that are currently recorded on eBird. That total is rising as I type out this post.
5. The Song Sparrow is a medium sized Sparrow, with a streaked breast and mantle, also has a ventral streaking often coalescing into a central breast-spot.
In my neck of the woods Song Sparrows are very common. They sing a very memorable song. Their tink calls have always reminded me of the White-throated Sparrow tink calls. Such a fascinating Sparrow species. As I'm writing this post I can hear a Song Sparrow singing near my window.
